What is the dutch information minister: Holland information minister Ronald Plasterk has said he will probably be able to name and arrest who is behind the reposted ads. The election of the Liberal Democrats to power in May has given new encouragement to those within the government who have long called for action to shut down the internet following the killing of journalist Andy Bowers.
As new politicians prepared to take power, the Dutch government on Wednesday began what was expected to be a lengthy debate over the country's stance on Google.
Plasterk reiterated his government's line of argument in a letter to Google CEO Larry Page on Tuesday, saying the government was ready to change its position if the web giant acted to reduce the demand for its services.
"Google must not be allowed to create a special position in the Dutch market," Plasterk wrote. "The economy and society are not for sale to a single company. Only limited companies can legally buy up an entire market."
Plasterk said the Dutch government had discussed the matter and was not "blindly opposed" to Google, as was widely reported.
Google has been accused by the Dutch government and several of the country's newspapers of failing to prevent the reposting of racist and pornographic images on its platforms.
The controversy comes at a time when many European countries are trying to prevent Google and other search engines from displaying information about results that were deemed offensive.
The Dutch government, led by the Liberal Democrats, has said it wants to take further action against the search engine, which is the largest in Europe and the second most popular search engine in the world, after the U.S.-based Google.
Jürgen van Huffelen, the Dutch justice minister, said he was considering two courses of action: upgrading existing court orders on internet providers to bring them in line with an agreement with Google that would force the web giant to filter material deemed illegal, and pursuing criminal prosecutions against individuals who spread racist or pornographic content.
In September, a court fined GoDaddy, an American company that hosts domain names for website owners, €400,000 (€340,000) for failing to remove offensive web pages from its servers.
Van Huffelen said he planned to discuss these plans with the judges of the court that had ordered GoDaddy to remove the material.
The government is expected to announce a new law that would update the current agreement with Google.
